Literacy is our school's focus. 50% of our population is reading below grade-level. It is not because they do not want to read. When given popular, young adult fiction that is relevant to their lives, they will swallow it whole and ask for more. Your donation will help us create a diverse classroom library in every classroom, regardless of content area. Obtaining 30,000 new books for our school would make this happen. We know this is a lofty goal, but we are dedicated to make this happen for our students. Students need to have access to good books -constantly, and we want to show them that we are a community of readers. Students would be allowed to self-select these books to read at school and check the books out to read at home. In addition, we want to move away from whole-class novels in our English classrooms and allow students to participate in book clubs. This allows students to have a choice in what they read, read more throughout the year, and book talk their texts with classmates to spread the love of good books. Also, we are requesting multi copies of books to encourage a community of readers, asking parents and teachers to read the texts alongside their students. The more relevant young adult books we share the more relevant young people we will create to share with the world.
