If I asked you what you had for breakfast or lunch, you could probably tell me without hesitation ? If I asked what your child had for breakfast or lunch at school, could you answer just as easily? Many of my students refuse to eat school food and would rather not eat at school. I want to do everything I can to make sure our children are successful at home, at school, and in life. While back-to-school is a very busy time for students, parents, and teachers alike, making sure students have food can potentially make a big difference. I know from experience that a hungry child is not a happy child. Hunger can lead to an inability to focus as well as behavioral outbursts in school. According to the basis of Maslow’s theory of motivation, human beings are motivated by unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher needs can be addressed. Needs at the bottom of the pyramid are basic physical requirements including the need for food, air, water, and sleep. Once these lower-level needs have been met, people can move on to the next level of needs, which are for safety and security. Once these needs have been reasonably satisfied, he or she may be able to reach the next level, and eventually, after all the lower needs are met, they can reach the highest level called self-actualization. With your support, we will be able to provide students with food as needed.
