These materials will help give my scholars a unique, hands-on experience in the realm of biology and life science. These students mostly live in the inner city, in apartments, and haven't gotten to experience gardening before. I want to provide this opportunity, while incorporating it into our biology lessons. Watching things grow, and being responsible for that growth, lends relevance to the field of biology. Students will get to examine the cells of plants they grew themselves. They'll get to watch photosynthesis happen in their garden. We'll cross-pollinate flowers to study genetics. We'll get to explore why plants need different soil types and temperatures when talking about natural selection. We'll be able to dissect plants we grew to see their structures. By having this garden, students will be able to see how biology relates to their lives. It will provide hands-on science, and the experience of responsibility. They'll be able to see the outcomes of their work, and experience joy in the success of their garden.
