Books are a wonderful escape for my students. Diving into rich novels as a class engages my students, helps build their reading fluency, and teaches them about times, places, and cultures they might not have experienced. When my students get a new book to hold, their excitement ignites deep conversations. Having enough copies of the novel for each student gives them the flexibility to read at their own pace that fits their learning style and needs. With a book in each student's hands, my students will not only build their reading fluency and comprehension but also encourage exploration of their own voice and identity. I chose this book because it has many themes to which my students can relate. These themes include intergenerational bonds, perseverance, and courage, and are told through an Asian American lens. I also intend to build my students’ understanding of the cultural richness in our country and the world. I hope the magical Korean folktales woven throughout "When You Trap a Tiger" will engage their imagination and build empathy for worlds beyond their own. Additionally, I have added several books, creating a text set that will broaden the context in which my students understand the central novel.
