Since the the Covid my students have lacked interpersonal social communication skills. We are a school who is in Oregon, currently the fastest growing covid state in the nation. We continue to follow the strict guidelines of our state; which means the norms of our children's socializing have been completely altered. We live in a poverty stricken area where 90% of families are struggling to make ends meet. The opportunities for our students to travel and make up for lost time is almost nonexistent. Families do not have funds to donate to our class for any project base learning. I firmly believe in teaching about others and ways of life that broaden their scope of our small town atmosphere. Sympathy and compassion for those around us starts here with us! I use social-emotional teaching that supports awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships. We need help to buy SEL curriculum and classroom hands on projects to foster the classroom togetherness atmosphere. We write stories, have group meetings, and use centers to create a positive learning energy in our class. We need a rug and seating for meetings where we look at each other’s faces. (Even though we are wearing masks) We need supplies to write plan how we would build a place we’re everyone could live with love and respect. We build with LEGO, blocks, or other materials when we are lucky enough to get our turn. (We share and have a waiting list.) we talk about our feelings and the feelings of others as we learn to look through other’s eyes.
