Have you ever tried to put something together that you just bought but you can't understand the directions? It's very frustrating and disappointing. Sometimes my families and students who speak Spanish feel that way and I feel so sad that I cannot help myself. I want to learn Spanish as a counselor so I can communicate with my students and families to build a trusting relationship that will help them succeed in school and in life. So many times, students and parents want to speak with me since they see me around but I have to pass them onto another staff member who speaks Spanish. Oftentimes, they will have to wait until someone is available. If I can speak Spanish, I can help my students express their concerns and I can also build relationships with their families so we can work together to meet the student's needs and goals.
