My students are very engaged on the idea of reforesting a mountain ridge within our community and are able to plant and grow plants on campus. The missing link to this project is how weathering and erosion will impact the soil being created by natural planting. Using stream tables will enable students to gain a better understanding of what to plant and how rainfall will impact erosion and soil movement in that location. Stream tables will enable the students to create and analyze rainfall and water damage control measures in a controlled environment in order to make better planning strategies to reforest a mountain ridge. It is important for the students to use a controlled trial and error method on a smaller scale. The tables are great for such a project and will provide students with more visual opportunities to see what can happen and how to avoid some mistakes. There is no better way to experience science then with actual hands-on learning.
