In traditional Hawaiian culture, people learn by watching and doing. Project-based, hands-on learning is our school's way of providing a culturally-appropriate learning environment for our students. In this project, my students will build underwater robots to complete simple tasks. I hope it will be their springboard to much bigger things, not just in school, but in life. "From work comes knowledge; from knowledge comes power." Or, "Ma ka hana, ka ike; ma ka ike, ka mana." This ancient proverb finds an echo in my belief that education is the key to success. In order to make education and its accompanying empowerment accessible to my underserved, long-neglected community, I have had to rethink and restructure my curriculum. It is my fervent hope that through a Robotics program, my students will be empowered to build on their cultural strengths and find success in this modern world.
