Most of the books required by the seventh grade curriculum are dreadfully boring. The students in my class rarely acquire the necessary standards when they are painstakingly delivered through an irrelevant text.
An updated classroom library will motivate students with varied interest and little appetite for "required texts" to stop faking their way through books and start advancing as skilled and engaged readers.
With a classroom library filled with relevant and meaningful books, I will be able to offer a blended model of learning that combines the benefits of the required texts with the motivational power of choice reading.
The blended model of my classroom allows me to lead close examinations of key passages from required texts and guide students to an understanding of important reading strategies they can transfer to their choice books. The students thrive on reading what they want to read while I gain a platform for demonstrating the critical reading skills students so urgently require.
