My school is a highly driven and motivated school. We have earned an "A" from the state and work very hard daily and through out the summer to maintain our "A" status. One of our critical areas is with our Hispanic and Free and Reduced Lunch population. The majority of our free and reduced lunch students (25% of total population)do not own books of there own or do not have a home library. It is amazing to see their eyes light up when they know they own a book. In addition, 25% of our students are below reading level by 1-3 years. Although our students have these challenges, they do not give up and always want to be successful in whatever they do. Last year our 6th grade intensive reading students ranked 4th in the county in Lexile reading gains on the Voyager program (only used in 6th grade last year). This was due in part to their exposure to a wide variety of books, and book and magazine subscription give-aways (through donations). They are so grateful to get them.
