As a social worker, I describe my job to the students as being like a teacher, but for feelings. While the fantastic teachers I work with help students develop reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, I help them process and identify emotions and trauma-responses. Together, we work to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted educational needs of our students. The kids and I build trust and develop a plan to achieve academic goals through personal development and therapy. In order to facilitate this delicate process, a classroom filled with social emotional tools is essential. Many of my students struggle with self-regulation. Creating a space that is comfortable and homey is the first step to calming them when they are having difficultly regulating. My DonorsChoose project aims to obtain sensory tools to help the students calm down when they are triggered, packets and tools to use in group therapy to help them grow and learn to process their emotions, food to help build relationships, various lights to create a safe and inviting space, art supplies for art therapy, fidgets for students with ADHD and supplies for them to help them express themselves through various platforms. What may seem like toys can make a tremendous impact on my students and their academic success, given their social-emotional needs and exposure to trauma. These tools can help calm a child in crisis, and help them learn skills that will positively effect their academic trajectory-- our ultimate goal. As of now, I have an empty classroom with very little supplies. Students feeling safe and heard is the gateway to emotional healing.
