A School garden will help our ELL students learn English and empower them by sharing their own culture with us at school. Learning and caring for living soil and plants can give our ELL students a foundation for understanding that there are similar principles that cross cultures such as growth, maturity, and cooperation along with many other lessons that transfer to human lives. In a school garden, our students will be able to experience these lessons ‘ hands-on’ through a learning method that is rich and inclusive to varied ethnicities. School gardening offers opportunities for community members to get involved and strengthen ties between school and community. Our ELL (Refugee) families will be able to bring their “Funds of Knowledge” to share with each other. Learning the English language can be supported through science and school gardens can help our ELL students learn the language, both academically and emotionally through reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities while actively caring for the food they are growing.
