My classroom, as well as my teaching philosophy, is centered on student choice and accountability. During the time I was attending high school I found myself reflecting on the learning process and formed the belief that students need choices to build ownership in the learning process. Research has since backed up my belief. Up until this year, the students in my class did this through choice-based thematic centers and "math tub" activities. By donating to our project you will allow us to take things a step further and increase each student's rate of success. Students will enter the room each day with the freedom to choose where they sit and what style of seat they will use for the day thus giving them more ownership in their learning. After gathering their learning tools (ie pencils, crayons, scissors, etc) students will choose what type of seat they will use for the day be it a wobble chair or balance ball at a regular size table. Others may choose to sit on the floor with a comfy seat or pillow at a lowered table. While still others may choose to stand at a raised table. For the first few months of school students will learn how to properly use each type of seat while accomplishing work; each student has the chance to practice using each seating option. Students will learn self-regulation skills through seating choices which will increase positive student behaviors and instruction/learning time. As the year goes on student seating options will become more fluid as classroom procedures and routines become natural and automatic. Slowly handing over this autonomy and giving the students more choice in class will ultimately build responsibility and accountability within each student in the room, thus increasing student success.
