I am currently unable to provide my students with the full theatre experience that they deserve since we are lacking scripts and monologues for performances. I want to dive into acting styles, showing students how both comedy and drama work. We are unable to have deep discussions on theatre without scripts at our disposal. These students are emerging performers, and having the right materials will aid them in their journey through theatre.
We will be using the Norton Anthology of Drama in script analysis and in class performance. This is an extensive book of FULL scripts that we will utilize for studying. Take Ten II: More Ten-Minute Plays will be utilized for both middle school and high school. Scholars will work in groups to direct, design, and perform ten minute plays.
Contemporary Monologues for Young Actors 1 & 2 will be utilized in our monologue unit at the beginning of each school year. This is the first interaction students will have with drama in my Drama 1 class.
I want my students to use multiple genres of theatre in their performance and utilize script analysis in both comedic and dramatic areas so that they can better understand the types of comedy and drama such as farce, satire, tragedy, and more. I also want to teach my students how to work collaboratively in a duet acting setting and how to use the space they’re given for collaborative performance.
I will have students read many types of scripts to get a feel for the various elements of drama and genres of scripts. They will analyze theatre in its most simple form and convey its meaning through performance, understanding how the characters work and what their motivations are.
