My classroom used to be a storage closet in an office building. Because our charter school is converted, we have many environmental challenges in regard to lighting, auditory input, seating and general use of space. My classroom is a Special Education Resource room that is starting from scratch. I am trying to develop a space that helps my students focus on learning while at the same time allowing them the opportunity to enhance their self-regulation skills. At this time my "classroom" has old carpet tiles, walls with chipped paint, filing cabinets and two tables with inappropriate seating that is more than 25 years-old. Special Education students struggle with maintaining basic skills often due to issues of Executive Functioning, that can be mitigated by a change in sensory input. Adding flexible seating and light covers with allow me to begin to alter the environment into a space that is conducive to learning with unique needs.
