My students have very diverse learning styles and needs. One thing they have in common is a need to take a break from frustrating or difficult tasks. Many of my students have a hard time transitioning from one activity to the next. A sensory center in my room will meet all of these needs. When frustrated and in need of a break, my kiddos can take a few minutes in the calm corner. When my kiddos are overstimulated, sensory activities like water beads, kinetic sand, and thinking putty will help them get back to a place where they are ready to learn. I am going to make weighted animals that rest on my kiddos' shoulders to help them stay calm while they are learning. When children use more of their senses while learning, they are better able to retain what they've learned. The benefits of having a sensory center in my classroom are huge!
