As a first-year teacher, I have come to find that my classroom lacks on-level class sets of books. I would love the opportunity to have access to a class set of the grade-level classic “Where the Red Fern Grows” in order to advance my students’ literacy growth. Whether it be through picture books or novels, I believe in the power of modeling accurate expression, fluency, and literacy strategies by reading aloud to my students. There is much diversity in my classroom, including Hispanic/Latinx students that are English Language Learners (ELLs), as well as students with a diverse range of learning abilities, and completing read-alouds with my diverse learners helps give them access and equity in the world of literature. With varying levels of readers in my classroom, I frequently work to model correct literacy strategies through reading short stories and picture books with them. These novels will allow my students to dive into a story that they can follow along with and better understand through scaffolded learning activities built around the novel. This novel will be taught in an accompanying unit with academic vocabulary, comprehension questions, formative assessments, and a final book report. The benefits of read-alouds are endless, as they promote building vocabulary, making connections between written and spoken word, and focusing on cognition by listening to a fluent reader. Thank you for reading about my project. We appreciate your time, thoughtfulness, and kindness. My amazing readers thank you for any support you can provide in their literacy journey!
