The book title "The Adventures of a South Pole Pig" will be used as a school-wide summer read as part of the One School, One Book program. Students will read the book with their families over the summer months and participate in school-wide discussions and STEM activities. It is widely understood that, on average, students lose academic ground during the summer, a phenomenon frequently referred to as “summer learning loss” or “summer slide.” Furthermore, a new term “covid-19 slide” has surfaced-whereby studies are indicating academic setbacks for students over the course of the past year, typical to that of summers. We are seeking to give our students and families an opportunity over the summer months to read a book together as both a family and a school community in order to offset some of the “summer slide” or "Covid-19 slide” of the past year. Doing so will also help to keep our community of learners and families bonded over the summer by a common activity of reading as well as being able to share about the book with one another online! We foster a love for reading during the school year and want to continue this over the summer months.
