Students at anytime can become overwhelmed in class. This is especially true with some special needs students. Add to all of this the pandemic schooling of the past year and we definitely have the potential for some vulnerable young children who may have some extra difficulties adjusting to school this year. I want to provide a classroom that feels comfortable and safe as well as brimming with outlets for creativity and hands on experiences - especially following a year where so much work was focused on devices. However, I also don't want any student to be overwhelmed. Having our Mindful Zone serves several purposes.The soft rugs and pillows offer alternative seating from desks and chairs where students who need it can take a break to de-stress or de-escalate. It will also be used by early finishers to be creative with our hands on STEAM related activity boxes with the rubber placemats used to muffle the sound of the building block projects. The learning continues in both scenarios with self help and social skills, creativity, problem solving skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and the engineering process all taking place in one zone of our classroom!
