When we covered the natural disasters lesson in our science unit, my kids were so engaged and excited. It has been a while since I heard so many voices wanting to participate in class. We talked about Hurricane Katrina, and how devastating it was. My students were not alive for this event, and cannot conceptualize it the same way as someone who has lived experience. I remembered a book I read in my credentialing program called "Drowned City", which was a graphic novel about Hurricane Katrina. I would love for my students to get a chance to read "Drowned City" because the book explains Hurricane Katrina and its effects extremely vividly. When I read this book, my heart went out to all those people who lost their homes and loved ones. While some people say that students are jaded, I think this book will make my students feel empathy for those who suffered through Hurricane Katrina. I believe my students would enjoy this book because they love graphic novels such as "Dog Man", "Captain Underpants", and " Diary of a Wimpy Kid". I want students to feel that the books we read in class for educational purposes can be interesting too.
