At our school our hula hoops get quite a lot of use with all grade levels. This year alone we have lost four hula hoops due to wear and tear. They are a critical part of the curriculum and teaching different skills such as locomotor, teambuilding, aerobic fitness, and gross motor movements. We start out the year playing the super fun hula hop showdown game. If you have not yet seen the game you need to check it out! We also use the hula hoops to teach different tricks that help lead up to other skills such as jump roping. Another use for the hula hoops is one of my students favorite games - Castle Ball!! Castle Ball is a game where EVERYONE is included and has a job. There are two teams and the goal is to be the last team with a hula hut standing. This game has every student active from the moment they walk into the "classroom." The gator skin balls will also be used during this game - as typically we use volleyballs which are not nearly as effective as the gator skin balls. Grades K-2 sometimes need to be kept in the classroom due to the weather and during this time I begin to work on our yoga and mindfulness unit. This teaches students lifelong lessons such as techniques on feeling calm and better decision making. They also work on perfecting and trying out different yoga poses and adventures! Yoga mats are critical in teaching this so all students can safely participate. Organization is critical in my pod since it is where I store the physical education equipment. The ball storage cart will replace the big trashcans I have been storing them in and help keep the equipment in good condition!
