Online reading as a means for developing student literacy had been increasing prior to the Covid 19 pandemic, and has only accelerated in the context of a greater reliance on remote learning. With the return of my students to in-person learning, online reading is an integral part of their literacy program and ensures seamless continuity between classroom and home.
Having functioning headphones is critical to my students' literacy development. It allows them to take advantage of online texts' "read aloud" functionality, an important scaffolding feature especially for students with reading disabilities or who are English Language Learners. Headphones eliminate ambient noise and enable to students to focus on a reading task without being distracted.
Unfortunately, the cost of headphones, as relatively cheap as they may be in today's world, is an added burden for students' families that are struggling just to put food on the table and keep a roof over everyone's head. Access to this kind of basic technology can make a huge difference in students' lives.
