Mr. Hinton's story is one of how justice can triumph over even the worst injustices, how hope can carry us through days of despair, how imagination can transport us to a different world. Ultimately, Hinton shows that even after the darkest of days, The Sun Does Shine. I would like to bring this book to my seniors as a message of hope, faith, and perseverance, but also because it fosters empathy and civic responsibility. This memoir is an important reminder that there is work to be done. Every one of us has a responsibility to humankind. Hinton's memoir shares this in the most poignant of ways. From the determination of his civil rights attorney, to the compassion of his oldest friend, to the mentorships formed on death row, Hinton reminds us that we must keep moving forward. I would like to share this story with my seniors for many reasons. Right now my students are doing their best to show up and conquer the complexities of Covid and its effect on their personal and academic lives. Hinton's book combines a reminder that the future will be brighter with the message of perseverance and doing the right thing when times are tough. It is also a compelling and accessible story that I believe will help my students develop into young adults who value reading and justice.
