The after school club I participate in is called The Changemakers. The students are a group of 9th-12th graders with passions to solve specific issues facing their communities, and we plan and execute projects that reflect our passions. The upcoming project that the students would like to do involves a topic known as "Period Poverty". This is essentially when low income young girls do not have the means necessary to buy feminine products such as maxi pads or tampons. Many times girls who live in poverty simply have to go without the 'luxury' of feminine products. This causes girls to have adverse mental health effects. For example, some girls without the necessities to keep their bodies clean may be self conscious which may in turn deter them for being productive in school and in other activities. My student's goal is to to purchase hygiene items to send to a youth homeless shelter and to provide to students at our school who may need it. The project I am working on right now is to provide women and girls in need with hygiene items in the form of small kits. With this grant money, I will buy the items going into the kits: Sanitary products, Toothbrush and toothpaste, Shampoo and Conditioner, Body wash or soap bars, Lotion, Hairbrush and Comb, Deodorant, Nail Cutter. These are the basic materials a girl will need to maintain hygiene I will be very careful and responsible with this money. I will find ways to save money so it can last longer as well as a way to build on the amount to be able to continue this project in the future.
