We would love to see our test scores rise and our suspension rates decrease. In doing so, we need to be able to appropriately meet the emotional and behavioral needs of each child. My students often feel frustrated with work being too hard or too easy, not having the sensory input, or feeling over stimulated at times leading to escalated behaviors and a lot of time out of the classroom. Sensory rooms can help children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills. By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms can help children learn to regulate their feelings and behaviors, which ultimately improves focus and being able to spend more quality time in the classroom. If we can help students learn to regulate their brain's negative reactions to external stimuli and develop coping skills for these experiences, my hope is that students will be able to truly reach the best of their abilities.
