When we think about picture books we might think they are only for younger readers, but people of all ages can benefit from reading picture books. Introducing concepts through story provides an engaging and low-risk way for middle school students to understand and connect with a new topic, which can be especially helpful in subjects they find challenging. Teachers can use picture books in the classroom as a read-aloud to introduce or reinforce topics of study or they can encourage students to read these books in class on their own as an extension activity. While not checked out directly to teachers, these books will be available in the media center and students may check them out to read at school or at home.
