During the Covid-19 pandemic, many students and their families have been stuck at home. For some children, this means staying in a home filled with abuse and neglect. Sharon Draper's incredible book, "Forged by Fire," touches on the hard subjects of abuse, addiction and overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles. More than half of our students come from low-income households, and unfortunately, many of them have experienced abuse, neglect or addiction up close. This book serves as a beacon of hope to these students, showing them that there is a way out of these situations. That through grit, determination and resiliency, incredible obstacles can be overcome in life. I have taught this book in a previous school, and my students always told me that this was their favorite book. I have seen first hand the power of this novel and know that while it may not solve all a students' problems, it succeeds in showing them that they are not alone and that they have power over their own lives.
