I am confident that providing these external, plug-and-play microphones will help transform the educational experience for my students, not only in my Language Arts class but in all of their classes. I have tried, several times, to encourage my students to turn on their webcams and use their microphones during virtual class sessions, and have even incentivized the use of those tools by offering extra credit for participation. Still, less than half of the students turned on their webcams to participate and fewer still turned on their microphones. When I asked students why they weren’t using the features, many told me it was because they didn’t have microphones or the ones built into their laptops didn't work well enough for others to hear them. I sent a survey sent out to current 9th graders and 10/35 of them (28.6%) said that they did not have a headset with a microphone. 48 current 10th graders completed the survey, and 17 of them (35.4%) said that they didn’t have a microphone. I would like to be able to purchase 100 earbuds with built-in microphones to send to my students who are in need of a microphone in order to participate and engage in class.
