Keeping the attention and focus of a classroom full of students is hard enough as it is, but when they are uncomfortable and irritated, it is almost impossible! In my classroom, I like to trust my students. We begin class together and then when it is time for the students to complete their group or individual assignments, they are allowed to group up and move around the room. The items in this DonorsChoose are great options for students to use when they are working on their assignments. "Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused." (Smith System) I teach Family & Consumer Sciences. Most of the lessons in my class have hands-on and project-based learning components. I work hard to facilitate learning in these settings, so students are required to take initiative and challenge themselves. I enjoy watching them grow throughout the semester. Flexible/alternative seating is a way to show students that I care about them and that is a great way to build our teacher-student relationships.
