I am a second-year 3rd grade English as a New Language teacher in Rochester, NY. This year, I've had an increase of different kinds of students other than my regular second-generation ELLs. Now, I have students that have never been in school in their home country due to natural disasters or poverty. I feel very fortunate that I get to meet my newcomer students and help them acclimate not only to a new language but to a new culture. It's very exciting, I wish you could see it! Our days are usually spent practicing social conversation drills, listening, singing, and most importantly trying to communicate in all of the classes with the new academic language we learn in our stand-alone sections. For some of my students, this is the first time they have attended a school and by donating to us, you will help us provide them with the needed materials our school doesn't currently have. My students are navigating a new language, a new life skill, and sometimes it is scary. Yet, if they have materials they understand, they will succeed.
