Social and emotional learning otherwise known as (SEL) is the process in which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Now more than ever SEL is imperative in the school setting. Never before has this generation of learning been faced with such an overall heightened sense of anxiety. As we continue to face the effects of COVID 19, I want to help minimize the overwhelming feelings, emotions, and stress caused by this pandemic and other everyday triggers. Therefore, I want to create a calm down corner. This corner is a designated space in the classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for my students to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional or physical control. This corner will house a comfy chair, posters of positive affirmation signs to create a calm and inviting space. Your support and care will help this project come to life and give my students a safe place to deal with their emotions.
