My classroom is all about building bridges of understanding between people through literature. I want my students to be able to get to know people, both real and fictional, whose life experiences are different from their own. Eighth grade humans are beginning to define themselves as individuals, separate from their family, while still honoring those families. I believe that good quality literature can help students know themselves better, and know the world around them in an impactful way. The reading selections I've included in this wish list are specifically intended to introduce my students to new worlds, new communities of thought, and to help them find their own voice among the many. Every book I can add to my classroom library increases the chance that a child will learn to love reading, or even learn to love themselves and others. Any support you can give to this project would be greatly appreciated!
