We strive to teach our students practical ways to enhance their knowledge, and it is important to know how to find new words, how to spell them correctly, and to understand what they mean. These will be used for learning at school, as our teachers check out dictionaries to use in the classrooms, and we also use them in the library during lessons about resources. Basic dictionary skills transfer to searching for information in other reference books, so teaching students to maneuver through a dictionary will be helpful in their future to conduct research or find information. Dictionaries are the first reference books we learn to use, and they can teach valuable skills. We want our students to increase their vocabulary and grow in their ability to find information on their own. By learning new words from dictionary, students will be able to recognize words when reading and also use them when speaking or writing. Learning how to use a dictionary gives them the confidence to ask questions and find their own answers.
