In any effective classroom, the classroom environment is key to substantial learning. In order to create a closer classroom family, I am hoping to use 3-D modeling and printing as an incentive for rewarding targeted behaviors.
I believe that great behavior management has two main determining factors: student involvement and buy-in. Now, to be honest, I have a decent behavior management plan already, however, it still is lacking these two factors for several of my students. I am not satisfied with reaching "most" of my students. I believe that "all" of my students have the ability to learn, and therefore, I need to reach them all.
Using 3-D modeling software, I plan to have students design collectible "Desk Buddies" that are awarded for specific social-emotional skills. These skills could be persevering on difficult concepts, classroom leadership, showing growth, and a myriad of other skills tailored to the specific needs of my students. By providing students with the opportunity to take charge of their own behavior, I expect to see an increased focus in my students, as well as an increase in meeting learning objectives.
Every year, this crazy one aside, fourth grade participates in a "Lemonade wars" challenge where students create a product to sell at a community event. 3-D Printing can offer my students a medium that will make their products more attractive to buyers. Hopefully, the teaching moment will be a discussion on supply and demand, which I can tie into various other products relevant to my students' lives.
I could continue on and on about the benefits this tool would bring to our classroom. From the integration of technology to the creative expression it would allow, the opportunity for lower-income students to experience 3-D modeling hands-on, the possibilities for classroom benefit are nigh endless.
