The engineering students will benefit from this grant by acquiring materials necessary to explore the renewable energy source of the sun. First students will deconstruct a solar calculator to see the inner makings of a solar panel. Students will begin with the 1volt solar panels creating enough power to run a small DC motor car. After the success of a small motor, students will work their way up to a 6v panel. Students now must use the appropriate tools to determined the optimal solar power for that time of day. Measuring the power available, students will design a machine of their choice to use the 6v of energy. In the culminating project, students will survey the school grounds and speak with administration and custodial staff to determine a solar project that can become a permanent feature of the school.
