I teach at a low performing, urban high school in Florida. This means that the majority of students at my school have not passed the state mandated reading and mathematics tests required for graduation. Many of my students come from low income homes, where their parents have only a high school education. Most of my students work after school to help offset their high school expenses, but sometimes it is not enough. My students seldom have the extra materials that I require for my class (graphing calculators, resource books, notebooks, etc). Although my students are faced with financial burdens, they are enrolled in an advanced placement course. They are taking courses that their parents cannot help them with at home, therefore, their need for additional classroom resources is great!
