During our school year my art department finances all focused towards providing students with affordable art supplies in individual packaging due to COVID. It was so important for them to have materials they could transport from school to home. The Art department also eliminated the art fee for this year due to students being required to have their own supplies. This has left me without the financial funds to support my ceramics projects for next year.
The multiple ceramic projects my students create each year are full of STE(A)M components that teach them how to build 3D vessels and sculptures from their own design. During ceramic lessons students also explore historical, cultural, and scientific inventions relevant to the evolution of ceramic art. Every student begins my ceramic unit building pinch pots then advances into a higher level project using slab or coil building techniques. I also allow time for my students to create vessels on the pottery wheel if they choose. My 8th grade students often build their own Japanese Jomon vessel from their own drawing after exploring the ancient vessels of the Japanese Jomon civilization. They explore the design concepts of form v's function and how the choices they make will affect their art.
Teaching ceramics I believe is a vital part of my students’ need to explore 3D art while also building their confidence as artists and inventors.
