Students in my classroom love to be creative! They are bored with the required reading material and want to find new and exciting books. After reading a survival/adventure story about a child (their age) who lives in the Catskill Mountains all by himself for a year, the students will research another location in the world, imagining the trials and tribulations he/she would encounter if they had to live there on their own for a year. Then, students will be given this book, THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN, which is a second person narrative Choose Your Own Adventure story. It takes place in the Himalayas and factual information is embedded into the choices/adventures from which the students may choose as they read. The genius begins when students are free to create their own CYOA story based on the area of their research. Creativity abounds!
