As you know, we've been going through a pandemic for over a year now. Through these difficult times, we've been engaging in hybrid learning in which two-fifths of the students are on zoom, while the remaining students are in the traditional classrooms. As I am teaching chemistry, a big portion of chemistry involves performing chemical labs, collaborating, and computing mathematical data. With distance learning, there has unfortunately been a disconnect between the e-learning students and the traditional in-person students. These tablets will allow traditional students to join the zoom and collaborate with e-learning students when we are engaging in group work. What has the collaboration been looking like now? A traditional student in the back of the classroom yelling across the room hoping the e-learning student can hear them through my laptop :) Distance learning can be difficult and I am hoping through the use of these tablets we build engagement among students. Not only would these tablets be used for group collaboration, they will also be helpful in allowing some students to complete assessments and assignments during class time. As we try to limit paper contact to reduce the spread of COVID-19, many of my traditional students do not have adequate internet connection on their smartphones to complete their assignments in a timely manner. Having these tablets will help eliminate the challenge among students and promote equitable learning!
