In 4th grade, we love to use novels to inspire kids to enjoy reading and also to teach valuable reading skills. Studies have shown that children learn reading skills and vocabulary words by just reading, especially realistic fiction. This project would benefit our whole 4th grade group by putting an engaging short novel in their hands to end the school year with. We push our little geniuses to dig deep into literature and connect with characters. Frindle is a hilarious journey following Nick Allen, a boy that loves to make life just a little more exciting. He decides to make it his mission to create a new word for your basic everyday item--the pen. This book is full of figurative language, new vocabulary, and characters that grow and learn. The 4th grade team uses novels as read alouds and as cooperative learning opportunities. When students read together, they can hear how words they may not have known before are pronounced. They can hear and discuss different opinions about the book and the lessons being taught. And they can model or listen to fluent written language.
