I chose materials that will help make a great difference in my unique students' learning experience since the way my students learn differs from your everyday average classroom. The items I chose disguise themselves as fun activities while providing a learning opportunity for critical skills my students require. For example, number/letter/shape recognition, number values, motor skills, and sensory toys help my students focus and relax during their breaks and keep them engaged. The skills learned through these materials can be generalized outside of the classroom since my students can use the letter/number recognition skills in their everyday lives, for example recognizing letters on signs. Learning number values can help them in the future to use real money to purchase items and advocate for themselves. Motor skills enhancement can help them in their penmanship since some of our students are lacking in fine motor skills. Students with ASD may experience a difficult time with input from what they taste, touch, smell, hear, and see, and the sensory materials will help them relieve some these difficulties. The chosen materials will provide my unique students with much needed stimuli whilst being engaged in learning.
