All of my students use technology on a daily basis, both in my school and at home. A lot of my students also are heavily into video gaming. I want to harness these two obsessions my students have and turn it into a unique learning experience for them. I want to teach my students how to build a retro arcade cabinet. The Raspberry Pi 4 will help me by being what the games will run on. It will essentially be the "brains" of the cabinet. The buttons and the screen are needed to be able to play and see the games. We are going to start by 3d printing the cases for tabletop-size cabinets, and eventually we will move to creating full-size cabinets out of wood, with the help of the shop teacher at our school. I firmly believe that technology and digital mediums are becoming more and more prominent in our society, which means that my art room needs to evolve as well. My hope is to be able to use this project as a stepping stone into simple video game design. I want my students to be able to experience digital art from a perspective that is totally different from anything they may have experienced before. My ultimate goal is to be able to start having a class each year that is devoted to creating an original arcade cabinet with custom-made games that are designed by the students in my classes. Once we have created the cabinet and the games, we will then donate the cabinet created that year to a local business in town.
