Due to the pandemic, my students can not come into the classroom to create their hand-building clay projects. I would love to continue with my curriculum by using air-dry clay instead of earthenware clay. Students will learn about creating coil clay pots. Coiling clay pots is a simple process of rolling coils, shaping them into various forms, and layering coils one at a time. This method is an essential technique for any form of hand-building ceramics. Even those who are new to clay should make large and intriguing pottery using the coiling method. Students create a base of the pot by rolling out a slab of the air-dry clay and then add coils. The pot must use three or more different types of hand-rolled coils. Students will use different coils such as columns, vertical ones, and circles, so the shapes mattered. With the air-dry clay, it isn't necessary to bring their pot back to be fired. They let it dry. I will then send out the paint and brushes for the students to paint their pieces. They will then take a photo of their pot and upload the picture into Canvas. They will then write their artist's statement.
