I am a certified teacher in Nevada/Counseling endorsement. Within my counseling position, I teach Social Emotional Learning lessons that are focused upon traumas, drug and alcohol awareness, bullying, problem-solving, grief and loss, behavioral needs, and many other concerns. I use mindfulness techniques when I teach yoga classes to help students to use skills for calming themselves and self regulation, anger management, kindness, etc. I am in every classroom, K-5. My project is focused upon helping students to understand their emotions through movement, writing, art, and hands on academic activities. We will use the yoga mats for yoga classes which I will lead, to help students to identify and manage difficult feelings that are part of life, but that have also intensified with experiences during the pandemic years. Students have been isolated, depressed, lonely, and have not been able to work on relationship skills. Our K-2 students have not known in person learning. Students have been online during much of the pandemic. Students need to involve their senses in learning, plan, organize, implement their designs, draw conclusions, and apply learning to the real world. We are going to build a garden, students and teachers being able to each have their own plot to address science standards, However, students also journal and write using the scientific process. My Student Council students will be helping with me. Taken from Nevada standards for SEL: Why is SEL important for Nevada’s Students? 1) According to a meta-analysis performed by of 213 studies involving more than 270,000 students, those who participated in evidence-based SEL programs showed an 11 percentile-point gain in academic achievement compared to students who did not participate in SEL programs. Students participating in SEL programs also showed improved classroom behavior, an increased ability to manage stress/depression.
