I am a young, white teacher who ended up in a class of students who are all African American. As much as I try to empathize with things that they hear and see, I know that our differences far outweigh our similarities. I constantly get comments like "I can't do that to my hair because your hair is different than mine" or I can't paint my nails that color because it will match my skin." With all of the current events in the world, I want these students to feel as though my classroom is a safe space for them. No matter whether our skin or beliefs match, we are one classroom family. African American History month is next month and I want these students to see people like themselves portrayed in the most positive ways. Middle school can be a hard enough time for students and besides all of the racial issues going on in the world, my students with disabilities are fully aware of what makes them different from their peers. My other goal with this project is to make these students understand that they are enough. They are loved, they are special, they are needed to make this world better.
