I live in a poorer county with a high population of African American students, as well as Latin and refugee members of the community. Teaching my students about our country’s history of racial tension and discussing empathy and kindness in the way we view each other is very important to me and my community. We will be reading this novel as part of our Civil Rights Unit. Students will read the book at home, as well as complete assignments and projects on their own. In our class meets we will learn about the history surrounding the circumstances of the novel and discuss the relevance of the novel today and what lessons we can take away from it. If not funded, I will not be able to teach this beloved story.
