Reading is a very important part of my 3rd grade classes. We include reading in all subjects including math. We set aside time every week in which we encourage our students to read any book of their choice while the teachers read as well. Past years we had comfortable places in the classroom where students would be able to be lost in their books. With the pandemic we continued the tradition but using a different approach. Students grab their favorite blankets and stuff animals and read with their teacher on Zoom. Although we are half way through the year I noticed that several of my students don't own books. As we transition back to the classroom, the books donated will allow my students be able to choose from a variety of books and read about characters that look like them as well. The books will have multiple purposes including fostering conversations around the themes, social studies lessons, as well as social emotional discussions. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
