I am requesting funds for 2 items that will help support my remote classroom experience. The first is a webcam that is desperately needed while remote learning. The camera on my computer is horrendous. This year, because of the pandemic, I am teaching a team of students who are all fully remote. Our only interactions are through the computer, primarily Zoom sessions. Students are very hesitant to turn on their cameras during class. Out of 25 students, a normal class will have 1-2 with their cameras on. Students do not know what their peers look like, they struggle with social and academic interaction and well as making connections with their teachers. I am continuously working on new strategies to encourage students to feel comfortable turning on their cameras, especially because students have communicated that they want to see their peers but are uncomfortable doing this themselves. Having a better camera for myself is one of many things that I believe will help encourage this. For students to be better able to see their teacher I believe this will help with creating a stronger personal connection. The second item is a wireless keyboard. As a math teacher, writing notes on a tablet with a stylus is significantly easier than typing given the mathematical characters/symbols used. Because of this, I run many remote meetings through a tablet. A wireless keyboard for this device would be incredibly helpful for interacting with students through our chat and other web programs that we use alongside writing notes. This would enable me to not have to switch between a laptop and a tablet for many lessons. One of the many challenges with remote teaching is the various platforms and technologies that we are constantly switching between and learning. Having this keyboard would minimize this stress.
