As a special education teacher, I noticed that most of my students struggle with recognizing letter names and sounds, sounding out, and blending out. These students are under the 50 percentile according to reading assessments. They require an individualized method and small group setting to focus and revisit phonemic awareness. They also need to gain confidence in their ability to use strategies already learned. For these types of students, it is easier to learn how to read by using their senses such as tactile, auditory, and visuals. By using hands-on phonics, my students can easily learn a strong reading foundation with purpose and enthusiasm. I can integrate these hands-on activities in my daily lessons according to each child's need. They can practice from home during small group setting or one-on-one status. They can also practice with their parents and siblings during asynchronous time. My students will be excited to learn with the variety of activities and games. As students learn how to read, their vocabulary, verbal expression and reading comprehension increases. By exposing students to effective reading programs, their writing skills improve as they gain more confidence and fully participate in other academic areas and most importantly in the general education setting. With these set of cards, my students will have multiple ways to learn how to read with efficiency and enjoyment.
