My students want to learn about the history and narratives of people and events that have shaped Hawaii and greater Polynesia. The Three Year Swim Club is a book that combines local, national, and international history that my students desire to understand. Living in a rural Hawaiian community, my students love learning about their island's stories. They are eager to read when they can make text-to-self connections. Many of my high school students have never travelled outside of Maui and have difficulty comprehending the scope of our nation's history. I am confident that The Three Year Swim Club will provide an unforgettable impact on their understanding of history and their willingness to read about places familiar and distant.
